Exercise of the month: Jordan’s “Fancy Fly”

Looking to challenge your stability and mobility? This one is a doozie. Submitted by Jordan VanDyck, PT at Aretas PT Hales Corners. It works your foot/ankle stability, core coordination, and shoulder strength. Enjoy our performance coach from Aretas Performance, Drake Sutton, modeling the exercise, instead of our usual stock photos.

Pictures from our very own Drake Sutton.

  1. Anchor a resistance band to a doorframe, pillar, or by stepping on it with your foot.

  2. Hold the handle of the band in the hand on the opposite side of the anchor point (ex: in our picture above, the band is anchored on Drake’s left side, so he holds the band with his right hand). Start in standing with your feet shoulder width apart.

  3. Step your outside foot backward into a reverse lunge (top, left). While stepping backward, rotate your body toward the anchor point. You should feel a stretch/activation in the glute of your front leg and behind the shoulder blade of the side holding the band.

  4. Return to standing from the lunge, finishing the movement by driving your knee up to a marching position (top, right). At the same time, pull the band, with your arm straight, away from the anchor point to finish in a “Y” position.

  5. Repeat, lunging, then doing the knee drive, 12 times, then switch sides. Continue for a total of 3 sets of 12 reps.

Make it easier: (no lunge or knee drive)

  1. Anchor a resistance band to a doorframe, pillar, or by stepping on it with your foot.

  2. Hold the handle of the band in the hand on the opposite side of the anchor point (ex: in our picture above, the band is anchored on Drake’s left side, so he holds the band with his right hand). Start in a split stance.

  3. Without moving your legs, rotate your body toward the anchor point (bottom, left). You should feel a stretch/activation in the glute of your front leg and behind the shoulder blade of the side holding the band.

  4. With your arm straight, pull the band away from the anchor point to finish in a “Y” position (bottom, right).

  5. Repeat the reverse fly 12 times, then switch sides. Continue for a total of 3 sets of 12 reps.

As usual, if the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s!

Recipe of the month: Southwestern Sweet Potato Bowl

This recipe comes from Instagram’s itsjackearly, submitted by Christine Hartl, Director of Operations. It’s toddler, husband, and meal prep approved. Christine’s 2 year old kept asking for “more potatoes” - and you probably will too! These bowls use simple, whole ingredients that take hardly any time to prep, so they’re great for a busy weeknight or a Sunday meal prep.

Ingredients: serves 4

  • 2 sweet potatoes

  • 1 lb chicken (breasts or thighs)

Smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper to taste

  • 2 avocados

  • Pico de gallo (or your preferred salsa)

  • Cottage cheese (Christine subbed Greek yogurt)

  • Freshly grated parmesan

  • Red pepper flakes

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 deg F. Prepare a sheet pan with a sheet of parchment paper.

  2. Cut the potatoes in half lengthwise, drizzle with olive oil, then place cut side down on the sheet pan. Cook for 30 mins or longer until fork-tender.

  3. Season the whole chicken breasts or thighs with paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper to taste. Feel free to use a premade taco seasoning for an even easier prep.

  4. Air fry, grill, sauté, or bake the chicken until at least 165 deg F internal temp. Once cooked, slice into small strips or bite-size pieces.

  5. Once the potatoes are done cooking, remove from the oven and allow to cool. Place in a bowl, cut side up. Mash with a fork.

  6. Top with chicken, cubes or slices of avocado, salsa, cottage cheese, parmesan, and red pepper flakes. Enjoy!

Staff Updates:

Congratulations to Jack Heinrich, PT at Aretas PT Wauwatosa, and his wife, Caroline, on the birth of their son, Ford! Jack will be back in the clinic after enjoying the beginning of fatherhood - when he’s back, be sure to ask for more baby pictures and first-time parent stories!

Past Events:

  • Birth Fest: Katelyn Maydaniuk, PT at Wauwatosa, and Kendra Bisping, PT at Hales Corners, represented Aretas PT at Milwaukee’s Birth Fest, helping to educate maternal/fetal medicine providers and expecting mamas on what physical therapy can offer before, during, and after pregnancy and delivery.

  • Milwaukee Fire Department and Oak Creek golf outings: Aretas PT helped golfers prep for their rounds and connected with the first responders in our community.

Keith’s Joke of the Month

Every Monday, one of our patients at Aretas PT Hales Corners brings in a few jokes to share with patients and staff. They have become famous enough that they will now be a staple of the monthly email blast.

They say the “machines of the future” will be as smart as people.

Ok, but which people? Because it kind of matters quite a bit.

Stop in at one of our clinics for any of your physical needs: health, wellness, rehabilitation, or to hear more information and stay tuned for next month’s updates!
