Exercise of the month: Physioball Rollout

Here’s something fun to do while watching the Packers struggle this season! We present two options for strengthening and stability, and one option solely for mobility. Try any and all options!

Pictures from Hep2Go.

  1. Start kneeling with your forearms on a physioball (exercise ball), pictured, left.

  2. Keeping your core engaged without hyperextending at your back, roll the ball forward with your forearms until you are unable to maintain your low back position.

  3. Use your core to pull the ball backwards, and return to the starting point.

  4. Continue for 12 repetitions, then repeat for a total of 3 sets.

Make it harder: (pictured, middle)

  1. Start from your toes in a plank position, rather than from your knees, with your forearms on a physioball.

Mobility only: (pictured, right)

  1. Start seated, with your hands on a physioball.

  2. Roll the ball forward until you feel a stretch in your low back.

  3. Return to starting position, then roll the ball forward and to the right until you feel a stretch in the left side of your low back.

  4. Return to starting position, then roll the ball forward and to the left until you feel a stretch in the right side of your low back.

  5. Repeat for 12 repetitions for 1 set.

As usual, if the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s!

Recipe of the month: Seasoned Spaghetti Squash with Chicken Sausage

Enjoy this cozy and very easy weeknight dinner recipe. Easily customizable, with lots of flavor and just a little effort, this is a great choice if all you want to do is pop things in the oven. From allyssainthekitchen of instagram.

Ingredients:

  • 1 spaghetti squash

  • 1 package (4 links) of chicken sausage, recommend Italian chicken sausage or similar

  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes

  • 1 package Boursin cheese, caramelized onion flavor highly recommended

  • Olive oil

  • Italian seasoning, to taste

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 deg F. Prepare a sheet pan with a drizzle of olive oil.

  2. Cut the spaghetti squash in half lengthwise and scoop out the pulp and seeds. Place face up on the sheet pan, then drizzle with more olive oil. Add salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning (or similar) to the face of the squash.

  3. Fill each half with half of the pint of cherry tomatoes. Cut the Boursin cheese in half, then place each half on top of the cherry tomatoes.

  4. Bake for 30 mins, then remove from the oven. While the squash is cooking, sauté the chicken sausage until fully cooked. If the chicken sausage comes pre-cooked, you can skip this step.

  5. Use a fork to mix the softened cheese and tomatoes together. Top with the chicken sausage, then return to the oven.

  6. Bake for an additional 30 mins. Use a fork to separate the inside of the squash to turn it into “spaghetti”.

  7. To minimize dishes, eat directly from the squash! Otherwise, add everything (except the skin of the squash) to a bowl, mix, and enjoy.

Staff Updates:

Congratulations to Eric King, PT at Aretas PT Wauwatosa, and his wife, Morgan, on the birth of their third daughter, Monroe! As you can tell, Monroe’s two big sisters, Remy and Palmer, are beyond excited for their newest best bud. Eric will be back this coming week, so make sure to pop on his schedule for your own rehab and see more pictures from the certified girl dad!

Past Events:

  • Local 1848 volleyball tournament: This tournament is an event that Aretas PT has staffed and enjoyed year over year. The Local 1848 is a local union, supporting firefighters in Oak Creek. A few of our Hales Corners physical therapists staffed the event, helping the competitors stretch before and after matches.

  • DEA golf outing: Continuing the theme of working with first responders and law enforcement, Aretas PT participated in the Drug Enforcement Agency’s annual golf outing.

  • Lake Country Fire and Rescue golf outing: Lots of golf this year! Aretas PT helped golfers prep for their rounds and connected with firefighters from Milwaukee’s western suburbs.

Upcoming Events:

  • WALTS Conference: The Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin annual WALTS Conference is coming up! Aretas PT will be a presenter at the conference, discussing how physical therapy and functional fitness is helpful, and necessary, for our firefighters. Look out for us there, at a local fire event, or taking care of our first responders in our clinics!

“Aretas was a great physical therapy organization that helped me manage and heal from a sports related ankle injury. They are very fire department friendly and made great effort to fit me in for last minute appointments before practice, so I can stay on the ice and be productive at the firehouse during recovery.”
— Tim, Metro Milwaukee Firefighters Hockey Team

Keith’s Joke of the Month

Every Monday, one of our patients at Aretas PT Hales Corners brings in a few jokes to share with patients and staff. They have become famous enough that they will now be a staple of the monthly email blast.

She didn’t make the cut for the Spice Girls because she was too basic, but I think we all agree…

Pumpkin turned out to be the most famous of them all!

Stop in at one of our clinics for any of your physical needs: health, wellness, rehabilitation, or to hear more information and stay tuned for next month’s updates!
