Exercise of the month: Prone Shoulder ER with Press

Summer volleyball leagues are closing out, football season is coming, and those dinner plates aren’t going to get onto the top cupboard shelf by themselves! If your shoulders need a little more stability and strength, this is a versatile exercise with lots of customization potential. This exercise is submitted by Jack Heinrich, PT at Aretas PT Wauwatosa.

Pictures from HEP2Go.

  1. Start laying on your stomach on a bed or bench, holding a dumbbell (pictured, left). Let your arm hang straight down toward the floor.

  2. Keeping your elbow in line with your shoulder, pull the weight toward you until your elbow is at a 90 degree angle.

  3. With your elbow in the same position, slowly rotate the dumbbell forward and up until your hand is level with your shoulder.

  4. Lower the dumbbell back to the ending position in step 2, then return to start and repeat.

Make it harder:

  • Still on your stomach, after step 3, press the dumbbell forward until your arm is straight.

  • Increase the weight of the dumbbell.

  • In standing (pictured, right), use a resistance band instead of a dumbbell.

Make it easier:

  • Still on your stomach, lose the dumbbell and do the exercise with body weight only.

  • In side lying (pictured, middle), keep your elbow tight to your side and rotate your hand toward the ceiling.

Repeat for 3 sets of 10-12 on each side, every other day, to improve your shoulder strength and stability.

As usual, if the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s!

Recipe of the month: Late Night Fruit and Chocolate Bites

This recipe comes from Instagram’s seattlehanddoc. Looking for something sweet that isn’t filled with added sugars? Try this one out for size! For parents of littles, the fruits listed here are choking hazards for small children - feel free to substitute mashed or sliced banana or cut the blueberries in half or crush them.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips

  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil

  • 1 ½ cup blueberries

  • 1 ½ cup pomegranate arils

  • Crushed pistachios, freeze dried strawberries, flaky sea salt for topping

Instructions:

  1. Melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil in the microwave, heating in 20 second intervals and stirring between each until smooth.

  2. Line a sheet pan or tray with parchment paper and make little mounds using about ¼ cup of fruit each. The recipe lists blueberries and pomegranate arils, but grapes, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, or any fruit you love works great.

  3. Allow the chocolate to cool to room temperature, then add to a Ziplock bag. Cut the corner of the bag and use it to pipe the melted chocolate over each fruit cluster.

  4. Top with crushed pistachios, freeze-dried strawberries, flaky sea salt, or any toppings you love.

  5. Freeze for about 30 minutes, then enjoy!

Staff Updates:

Abbi Sitte joined our team this month, and is excited to start working with Aretas Performance clients! A few things about Abbi:

  • Favorite exercise: Spanish squat or anything back-related

  • Why Abbi loves the training world: I love that training is one of the few places where you get to choose to challenge yourself every day. It’s a different kind of blessing to push your body, see what you’re capable of, and know you’re becoming someone your future self will thank you for.

  • Go-to meal prep recipe: Ground beef, sweet potatoes, and cottage cheese

  • Best spot in Milwaukee: Lakeshore park - can’t beat the view of the city and running right by the water

  • Advice for future clients: Focus on becoming stronger, not just physically, but mentally too. Don’t underestimate what you can accomplish by simply staying consistent. Small habits repeated over time will always beat perfection.

Past Events:

  • Aretas and Milwaukee’s DPW: Aretas continues to help educate our community - this time, with Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works employees at their Sanitation safety meetings! Look for us again at future meetings and reach out with any questions.

Future Events:

We are excited to continue working with our community in these upcoming events (and more):

  • Birth Fest MKE: we can’t wait to meet any expecting mamas and other providers at Milwaukee’s 2026 Birth Fest, an event at Mount Mary University on August 1. If you’re interested in learning more about our pelvic floor specialty and how we can help, check out of pelvic floor page.

  • Working at and competing in the Milwaukee Fire Department golf outing.

  • Running a stretch tent at the Local 1848 Oak Creek Fire golf outing.

Performance Updates:

With the addition of Abbi to the Aretas Performance team, we will be updating our performance coaches’ schedules in the near future. Look out for more information here next month!

Keith’s Joke of the Month

Every Monday, one of our patients at Aretas PT Hales Corners brings in a few jokes to share with patients and staff. They have become famous enough that they will now be a staple of the monthly email blast.

What do Mathematics teachers call retirement?

The aftermath.
