Exercise of the month: Standing Hamstring Stretch

Getting ready for a summer road trip but worried about tight hamstrings? This stretch not only relieves hamstring tightness, but also helps the glutes, calf, and sciatic nerve.

  1. Stand with your heel on a box, step, or chair and your chest tall.

  2. Hinge forward at your hips and reach toward your front foot.

  3. Hold this stretch for 20-30 seconds, then relax. To increase the amount of stretch, tighten your quad (thigh).

  4. Sciatic nerve floss: in this position, pump your toes up and down like you’re pushing on a gas pedal. When your toes are pointed towards you, you may feel increased stretch in the back of your leg or calf. Repeat the ankle pump 10-15 times, then relax.

  5. Glutes: in this position, reach the hand on the arm opposite your front foot forward and across your body. Hold this stretch for 20-30 seconds, then relax. You may feel a stretch in the back or outside of the front hip in your glute muscles.

Repeat the stretch 2-3 times on one side, then switch. You can do these stretches as often throughout the day as needed.

As usual, if the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s!

Recipe of the month: Healthy Chocolate Mousse

This recipe was submitted by Remy Ziolkowski, Patient Administrative Lead for Aretas PT. Enjoy this with summer fruits like strawberries, raspberries, and bananas, as a side dish or dessert. This recipe is dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan and has healthy whole ingredients. This recipe can be found in the Well+Good Cookbook.

  • ¼ cup coconut oil

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla powder or extract

  • ¼ cup almond butter

  • ¾ cup pure maple syrup

  • 1 ½ cups raw cacao powder

  • ¼ cup cold filtered water

  • 3 tablespoons chocolate protein powder (optional, add extra cacao powder to supplement)

  • Pinch of flaky sea salt

  • Fresh raspberries, for topping (optional)

  • Cacao nibs, for topping (optional)

  3. Top with raspberries and cacao, as desired.

  4. Enjoy!

Staff Updates:

Jordan VanDyck, PT at Aretas PT Hales Corners, and his wife, Danielle, welcomed their second baby, Cam! Mom, Dad, and big brother Wells are excited and in love.

Deontay Walsh, PT, is joining the PT team at Aretas PT Wauwatosa on May 26 after completing his final clinical rotation at our clinic this spring. Deontay also recently proposed, so double congratulations are due to him and his fiancee, Ashley! Learn more about him here, and use our scheduling link here to schedule a visit with him or any of our other providers!

  • Favorite exercise: hiking challenging terrain

  • Fun fact: proud owner of two tortoises, Stavi and Leona

  • Favorite animal: Bengal tiger

  • Drink of choice: coffee with a shot of espresso (or gin and tonic, after hours)

  • Advice for patients: “If you have a ‘why’ and a willingness to consistently try, then I am your guy. My primary objective as a physical therapist is to be a resource in helping you achieve the goals that provide you with most value and meaning in your life.”

Past Events:

  • Aretas and DPW: Aretas PT presented at Milwaukee’s Department of Public Works safety meetings this month to review pre- and post-shift stretching and hydration in the summer months to keep our local DPW workers safe and healthy.

  • High-Risk Pregnancy Coach: Aretas PT Hales Corners and Wauwatosa each have a pelvic floor specialist. Our pelvic floor providers, Katelyn Maydaniuk (Wauwatosa) and Kendra Bisping (Hales Corners), are well-connected in the Milwaukee pregnancy, postpartum, and urologic community. This past week, we connected with Cassandra Koblitz, high-risk pregnancy coach and owner/founder of Hakuna Matata Mamas. Cassandra supports women who dreamed of a low-intervention birth but are blindsided by a high-risk diagnosis that requires medical interventions and monitoring. She advocates to create a labor and delivery experience that is as safe as possible medically, while also allowing for the mother to have aspects of the birth she hoped for.

  • Ice Age Trail 50: Some of our staff (Katelyn Maydaniuk, PT at Aretas PT Wauwatosa) and patients participated in the Ice Age Trail 50, a trail race in the southern Kettle Moraine with half marathon, 50 km, and 50 mile distances. Aretas really showed up, with Devin, a former patient, taking 3rd place overall in the 50k race. Congratulations to all of the runners who participated!

Keith’s Joke of the Month

Every Monday, one of our patients at Aretas PT Hales Corners brings in a few jokes to share with patients and staff. They have become famous enough that they will now be a staple of the monthly email blast. This joke is from a previous Monday’s selection.

The guy who coined the term “wind chill” died this year at 86.

His wife said he felt like 75.

Stop in at one of our clinics for any of your physical needs: health, wellness, rehabilitation, or to hear more information and stay tuned for next month’s updates!
