Exercise of the month: Half-kneel Thoracic Rotation
If you’ve gotten sick this winter, it’s likely the muscles you use for breathing are tight from coughing. This is a great exercise for loosening your chest and upper back and stretching through the muscles between your ribs. This can be done in a kneeling position, seated on the floor, or seated on a chair.
Version 1 (Kneeling)
Version 2 (Seated)
Version 1 (kneeling):
Start kneeling next to a wall, and stack your ribs over your hips.
Interlace fingers behind your head, elbows wide.
Bring the elbow that's against the wall up and over your head to bring your elbow behind you so you're now facing the wall.
If comfortable, add a bend backward and forward to enhance the stretch
Take 1–3 slow breaths, then return upright. Repeat 6-10 times, then rotate your body away from the wall, and bend backward and forward, as tolerated.
Rotate 90 degrees so that you are kneeling on the other knee, then repeat steps 1-5.
Version 2 (SEATED):
Start in a seated position with your elbows wide and back flat.
Slowly rotate your upper body to one side, take 1-3 deep breaths, and repeat to the other side for 6-10 reps each direction.
Complete 3 sets of 6-10 rotations each direction, 1-2 times per day.
As usual, if the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s!
