Exercise of the month: Single-leg hinge with clamshell

This month’s exercise is a doozy! It works on balance, stability, and glute/core strength and coordination. This is a great one for runners, pregnancy/postpartum, or anyone wanting to work on their balance. We are including the advanced version (standing, left) and a simpler version (sidelying, right), for you to try! This exercise was recommended by Jack Heinrich, PT at Aretas PT Wauwatosa.

Version 1 (Standing)

Version 2 (Sidelying)

Version 1 (standing):

  1. Place a band above your knees. Rest one foot on the wall behind you and hinge forward at the hips without rounding your back.

  2. With the other leg in front and knee slightly bent, rotate the free leg out against the band.

  3. Repeat for 10-12 reps.

  4. Switch leg positions and repeat on the other side.

  5. You can use one hand for balance as pictured!

Version 2 (sidelying):

  1. Start laying on your side with a band above your knees.

  2. Tighten your core to stabilize your back and prevent arching.

  3. Push your bottom knee down into the ground and use your glutes to rotate your top knee up against the band.

  4. Repeat for 10-12 reps.

  5. Roll onto your other side and repeat.

Complete 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions a few times a week to build stability and strength.

As usual, if the movement is painful in any way, use this link to book an appointment with one of our PT’s!

Keith’s Joke of the Month

Every Monday, one of our patients at Aretas PT Hales Corners brings in a few jokes to share with patients and staff. They have become famous enough that they will now be a staple of the monthly email blast. This joke is from a previous Monday’s selection.

How do cats learn to clean themselves?

They go to cat-lick school.
